Why?

. . .[W]e seek an enlargement of our being. We want to be more than ourselves. . . . We want to see with other eyes, to imagine with other imaginations, to feel with other hearts, as well as with our own.
My eyes are not enough for me, I will see through those of others. Reality, even seen through the eyes of many, is not enough. - C. S. Lewis
Granma said you couldn't love something you didn't understand, nor could you love people . . . if you didn't understand the people. - The Education of Little Tree
I think I've loved someone I didn't understand completely (I know that parents love their teenagers), but I don't think I could love someone without trying to understand them.
I don't believe we can effectively work together as a people, as a country, or in the world as a whole, if we can't understand each other at least a little. And, as they saying goes, "No one cares how much you know 'til they know how much you care."
