The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

I write about this church because I know it. I want to hear how the organizations you know are building bridges.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints builds bridges between itself and others through the world, and between individuals everywhere:

1. By serving others. See Church Humanitarian Aid, Japanese Church Members Helping People Suffering From Disaster or http://newsroom.lds.org/topic/humanitarian-services

2. By teaching the gospel.
  • I have found that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the great equalizer: "Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord." - Ephesians 2: 19-21. I have been in the temples built by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Those who attend the temple and serve there dress in white. Everyone is equal. All are children of God, and amazingly each person's individuality can be better seen in such a setting.
  • I and my family have been a part of "Mormon" congregations throughout the world. The feeling we feel in each is the same, no matter where we go.
  • Missionaries, sent throughout the world, develop a love for the people and the cultures in which they serve, which helps them build bridges their whole lives. When the winter Olympics came to Salt Lake City in 2002, visitors were astonished by the welcome they received by people who had been to and loved their respective countries.
3. Through the arts.
  • The Church's Brigham Young University, sends its performing groups throughout the world. They have also produced programs that have aired on PBS stations across the United States. Here is a sample:

Negotiation

The best book I have read on up-front, respectful negotiation is Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In. Maintaining relationship is listed as key to successful negotiation. Again, highly recommended.

Relationships

Another of my favorite books helps break down walls in relationships (and build bridges in their place): I Don't Have to Make Everything All Better by Gary and Joy Lundberg. It's an amazing book.

Harbinger of Change

The Arbinger Institute ("arbinger" is ancient French for "harbinger") helps individuals, families, and organizations worldwide find success by seeing people as people, not objects. One of my favorite books is their Leadership and Self Deception. I want to read The Anatomy of Peace.

Last Laborer: Thoughts and Reflections of a Black Mormon

A new book sheds some light on Mormons, Black American Culture, and Black Mormons.

I highly recommend it. The author, through this book and in many other ways, is building bridges of understanding.
